The San Juan Island Community Foundation is proud to announce that the goal of $10,000,000 in philanthropy for the new PeaceHealth – Peace Island Medical Center (PIMC) has been achieved, assuring an on-time completion of the project by the scheduled opening date of December 2012.

The Foundation’s PIMC Fund Development Chairman, Tom Cable, announced reaching the goal this week saying, “It is incredible to be part of such a generous community that is willing to strongly support our grassroots efforts to transform our healthcare system. The $10 million, combined with PeaceHealth’s $20 million, provides a huge long-term beneficial impact on the availability and quality of healthcare services on the Island.”

The new medical center will include an expanded clinic, 24/7 emergency room, 10 bed inpatient critical access hospital, advanced laboratory and diagnostic center, outpatient surgery facility and a cancer and chronic disease center with on-island chemotherapy.  The PIMC facility will share the campus with the new San Juan Island EMS building with close coordination between the respective operations.

Both the Community Foundation’s and PeaceHealth’s contributions are non-profit gifts and permit the new medical center to be constructed without tax dollars.  Following the well-attended ground breaking in July, construction has moved rapidly forward with much of the site work and foundations already complete.

“The development of the new PIMC project has also helped transform the Community Foundation,” according to Charles Anderson, board chair.  “By taking on a project of this scale and importance the Foundation has grown immensely which benefits all of our non-profits and community projects.  Our capabilities for project conception, management and funding have allowed us to broadly help our community in a wide variety of ways including basic social needs, education, arts, environment, community infrastructure as well as healthcare.”

As with the highly successful PIMC project, the Community Foundation stands ready to assist our community’s generous donors to realize their goals through gift and legacy planning, personal and family donor advised funds and targeted donations to existing non-profit funds held by the Foundation.

“The need for PIMC financial support doesn’t end here,” said Tom Cable.  “The Foundation will continue raising additional funds for advanced equipment and service components to the new PIMC offerings.  These could include building out the second operating room and purchasing additional equipment for use by visiting specialists.  In addition, we would like to provide scholarship funds for medical training for local residents.”
