Volk – Geyman Scholarship
John Volk and John Geyman have a common interest in flying and applying those skills to the benefit of the citizens of our community. Both these men were rooted in the belief that helping our neighbors is a duty all individuals with medical training should be doing.
Dr. Geyman is a retired general physician who practiced here on the island as well as at the University of Washington Family Medicine Department. John Volk, a retired California Highway Patrolman, was one of the emergency medical techs who made up the fire department’s “first responders” team.
Both men were founding members of the San Juan Eagles, a voluntary group of pilots dedicated to transporting cancer patients to the mainland for their treatments. They were passionate about serving the needs of our community and spending their “off hours” helping others by flying them to appointments or transporting medical techs to other islands. Their combined efforts exemplify the powerful integration of aviation and medicine in serving the public.
Our goal is to honor both John Volk and John Geyman by encouraging others to follow their example, and by giving them the tools to do so. To this end, the San Juan Pilots Association has established the Volk – Geyman Scholarship, providing financial assistance to students pursuing careers that blend the fields of aviation and medicine to support the health and well-being of our community. The scholarship program seeks to encourage and reward the sort of friendship, leadership, and service that typified their presence in our community.
