A Commitment to Stability in San Juan Island’s Housing Crisis
The San Juan Island Community Foundation proudly supported the Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center (JLSFRC) with a grant of $25,000 aimed at providing emergency rental assistance to local households amid the ongoing affordable housing crisis. JLSFRC’s efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of many, ensuring that residents can continue to live and work in their community.
Objectives and Achievements
The project set out with the goal to assist at least 32 households with one-time rental help due to a sharp increase in residents seeking emergency support. Although the project faced unexpected challenges due to rising rental costs, leading to assistance for slightly fewer households than targeted, the overall objectives were largely met. The funds provided crucial aid during the peak summer months, helping residents avoid more severe financial crises.
Impact on the Community
“JLSFRC was able to follow up with 27 of the 29 households at the 1-month mark, and 26 at the 3-month mark. Of those contacted, 1 household ultimately moved off-island and 2 others relocated to different housing on SJI. The rest remain stably housed,” explained Jennifer Armstrong, Executive Director of JLSFRC. The project not only prevented displacement but also ensured ongoing stability for these households, which is crucial in maintaining the fabric of our island community.
