This scholarship is not available to members or relatives of the San Juan Island Community Foundation (SJICF) Board; Members or relatives of SJICF Scholarship Review Committee; SJICF employees and their relatives; and employees or family members of donors to the scholarship for which you are applying.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

The following support materials MUST be received in the San Juan Island Community Foundation office in order to have your application reviewed. If any of these materials are not received, your application will be considered incomplete and not eligible for review for a scholarship.

1. PERSONAL ESSAY*

Rather than writing a new essay for this application, please submit your favorite essay from one of your college/educational program applications.

Your essay should help the scholarship committee get a genuine sense of who you are as a person—your values, experiences, challenges, motivations, or perspectives.

If you didn't have to write an essay for your college/educational program admissions application, please choose one of the prompts provided on the Common App website and attach a 500-650 word essay.

2. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

Please have official transcripts sent directly from your college and/or other training institution(s) to the San Juan Island Community Foundation via email (scholarships@sjicf.org) or mail (PO Box 1352, Friday Harbor, WA 98250). If you graduated from high school in the past two years or if you haven't attended college/other training programs, please have the school send an official high school transcript.

3. FEDERAL TAX FILING*

If you did not fill out the FAFSA or WASFA application, please attach a copy of your most recent federal tax filing.

4. ACADEMIC & EMPLOYER/EXTRACURRICULAR LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

Two letters of recommendation from community leaders and/or employers must be submitted by the April 22, 2026 deadline. A parent or relative may not be used as a reference.

Letters should be submitted in one of the following ways:

If your recommender has already written you a letter of recommendation, they can also use the link above to attach their letter and send it to us directly.
If your recommender has provided you a copy of your letter of recommendation, you may upload it via the link and select the "Submitted by student" check box.

Please provide the following link to two community leader(s) and/or employer(s) so they can fill out and submit your letter of recommendation directly to the San Juan Island Community Foundation: https://sjicf.org/scholarship-letter-of-recommendation/. They can fill out our online form or attach a recommendation letter they have already written for you. Both of these options will be submitted via the link provided above. A parent or relative may not be used as a reference.

IMPORTANT! Your application will not be considered complete until all of the above items have been received at the San Juan Island Community Foundation office.

I understand that, if selected, the awarding of funds is contingent upon my enrollment in an accredited institution, and that the funds will be paid directly to the institution and used toward the cost of my education.
