Vida Wight Memorial Scholarship

Vida Luisa Demuth Wight was born in Guatemala City on October 18, 2000. By the time Vida was six months old she had arrived here in Friday Harbor where she was raised and treasured by her parents, Larry Wight and Cere Demuth.

Vida attended both Friday Harbor Elementary School and Friday Harbor High School, and she spent four special years at Spring Street International School. Vida attended college in Bellingham at Western Washington University at age seventeen. There she was majoring in Spanish and Dance, while minoring in psychology. When she was home on breaks she loved working at Mama Bird Farm.

Vida means life in Spanish, and her name suited her perfectly. Vida was full of life and gave so much of herself to all whom she loved and in everything she pursued. You can read more about Vida’s life, death and spirit here.

The Vida Wight Memorial Scholarship is a way for Vida’s family and the community to honor Vida’s remarkably beautiful life and vibrant spirit by supporting another determined young woman in pursuing an area of study that Vida herself was passionately pursuing at the time of her death.

The Journey
By Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
What you had to do, and began,
Though the voices around you
Kept shouting
Their bad advice‚
Though the whole house
Began to tremble
And you felt the old tug
At your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
Each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
Though the wind pried
With its stiff fingers
At the very foundations‚
Though their melancholy
Was terrible.
It was already late
Enough, and a wild night,
And the road full of fallen
Branches and stones.
But little by little,
As you left their voices behind,
The stars began to burn
Through the sheets of clouds,
And there was a new voice,
Which you slowly
Recognized as your own,
That kept you company
As you strode deeper and deeper
Into the world,
Determined to do
The only thing you could do‚
Determined to save
The only life you could save.
