Marcia L. Zakarison M.D. Scholarship

This scholarship is provided in the name of Dr. Marcia Zakarison, who believed that every young person should have an equal opportunity to receive the best education possible. Dr. Zakarison was a healer of body and soul. She was an accomplished physician using her skills in medicine and her empathy and passion for the human spirit to promote healing.

Dr. Zakarison came to San Juan Island in 1993 with her husband and two young daughters. Six months later, Dr. Zakarison began practicing family medicine in La Conner and the San Juan Islands, and in 2000 she accepted a permanent position as one of four physicians at Inter Island Medical Center (now Peace Island Medical Center) in Friday Harbor. She quickly became highly respected for her compassion with patients, professionalism, and leadership working with the medical staff. At Inter Island Medical Center, Dr. Zakarison practiced clinical and emergency medicine and was the Medical Program Director for San Juan County EMS at the time of her death in 2007.

Dr. Zakarison would be honored to have this scholarship be given in her name for the purpose of supporting student education in human medicine and the healing arts.
