At the San Juan Island Community Foundation, we believe that supporting theatre extends beyond just funding performances—it also means ensuring that the spaces where these performances occur are safe and well-maintained. That’s why we are proud to have supported the San Juan Community Theatre in their critical Backstage Safety Upgrade project, a vital initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and functionality of their technical operations.
The Need for Upgrades
The San Juan Community Theatre identified a significant safety hazard in their existing stage equipment. The outdated sandbags used in their counterweight fly system for set and lighting changes were not only inefficient but were also posing serious risks to the technical crew—many of whom are dedicated volunteers. These bags, which had been patched multiple times, were leaking sand, creating slipping hazards and the potential for sand to fall into crew members’ eyes.
Implementing Crucial Safety Measures
With the support from the Foundation, the theatre undertook the Backstage Safety Upgrade project, which involved several key improvements:
- Replacement of Old Sandbags: The old, leaking sandbags were replaced with new, reliable counterweights that meet the latest safety standards.
- Installation of Static Chain: To further secure the fly system, 200 feet of static chain was installed, ensuring that the system meets the specific requirements for theatre work.
- Addition of Batten Clamps: New batten clamps were introduced to stabilize set pieces attached to the battens, significantly reducing the risk of items falling and maintaining structural integrity.
A Safer Environment for Creativity
“The improvements from this project not only enhance backstage safety but also demonstrate our commitment to the well-being of our volunteers,” stated D. Lee Grooms, highlighting the project’s success. This initiative has not only mitigated immediate risks but has also fostered a safer, more secure environment, allowing volunteers and performers to focus on their craft without safety concerns.
While the primary goal of enhancing safety was successfully achieved, the project also had a broader impact on the theatre’s operations and community perception. Volunteers and staff at the theatre now feel more valued and secure, knowing that their safety is a priority. This has led to increased morale and a stronger sense of community within the theatre.
We’re thrilled to see the tangible benefits of the Backstage Safety Upgrade project. By supporting such initiatives, we reaffirm our commitment to the arts and to the safety of all who make these cultural experiences possible.
